A disappointing field of 15 pairs contested the 2023 Club Foursomes Championship on Sunday 27th August over eighteen holes, with the Gross winners being presented with the R. L. Newman Tray and the Nett winners also recognised with the Nett Championship Trophy.
The Club Foursomes Championship was first played in 1969 and after a break of three years recommenced in 1973 when club stalwart Bob Newman presented the perpetual trophy to the club. Bob was best known as Tournament Director of the Nedlands Masters over many years and an “A” Grade Pennant player.
GROSS CHAMPIONSHIP – R. L. NEWMAN TRAY
The defending Champions Steve and Matt Dumble were out to win the R.L Newman Tray for the second consecutive year but would face strong opposition from Alister Miles (+2 H’Cap) and Edmund Hall (Scr H’Cap), Tristan Geerlings (1 H’Cap) and Ajay Dhadli (4 H’Cap) and Keedan Nelles (7 H’Cap) and Brendan Jones (4 H’Cap)
We pick up play after 9 holes and two pairs were one under the card – Alister Miles and Edmund Hall and Keedan Nelles and Brendan Jones.
Tristan Geerlings and Ajay Dhadli blew their chances and were 6 over after 7 holes. They rallied and finished 8 over for the day. The defending champions were out of contention after a poor start – 5 over after 4 holes.
So, it was down to 2 pairs and after 12 holes the young guns were still one under and led by one, courtesy of a double bogey from their rivals. on the 12th hole.
3 consecutive bogeys by Keedan and Brendan saw both pairs on Even Par with 3 holes remaining.
Alister and Edmund birdied 2 out of the last 3 holes – the eighteenth with a downhill 40-foot monster putt from Alister. So, they finished with an even par round of 72. Keedan and Brendan played the last 3 holes square with the card and two adrift. A valiant effort but the 2023 champions were Alister Miles and Edmund Hall.

NETT FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP
They may have lost the Gross Championship but there was some consolation for Keedan Nelles and Brendan Jones winning the Nett Championship with a fine score of 68.5 from a combined handicap of 5.5.
Second was another young pairing of Will Ebidam (22 H’Cap) and Lochie Evans (27 H’Cap) with 70.5 from their handicap of 24.5.
Footnote – The previous Sunday the winners and Runners up teamed together to qualify for the State Final of The Scramble
Next came Rehan Alikhan (10 H’Cap) and Gary Hing (9 (H’Cap) with 71.5
They were a chance, but 3 double bogeys did not help their score at all.
Congratulations to the 2022 Nett Foursomes Champions Keedan Nelles and Brendan Jones
Footnote – Hopefully, next year the championship will attract better support from the membership.
