It is with great sadness we advise members of the sudden death of David McFarnell. He died peacefully at home from a heart attack on Friday 19th May at the age of 78. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Kaye.

“Seve” as he was known by most who knew him because of his uncanny knack of making pars from “anywhere”, was born in 1944 in Kitale a small town in the north west of Kenya, moved to England in 1963 and to Sydney in 1968. He was an excellent Hockey player and later on Rugby League player. In 1974 he moved to Perth where he met his future wife, Kaye. He taught at the same school for the next 28 years.

He joined Nedlands in 1976 and quickly reduced his handicap to single figures.

In 1982 he was elected Vice-Captain and moved on to Captaincy for part of 1983 and then 1984 and 1985.

Seve played some “B” Grade pennants and then in later years Senior Pennants.

He ceased playing competitively in September 2021.

Seve became a member of the WA Golf Association Match Committee and also sat on the Executive Committee of the WAGA. During this time, he served as Chairman of the Junior Council, a State Selector and was appointed Manager of the State Colts Team. He also officiated at several Australian Opens.

Some comments received from members-;

Very sad news. Losing a stalwart of the club, a fine and competitive golfer, a member of the table and a bloody good bloke. He will be missed.

Seve was such an irrepressible character around the club and a staunch friend to all. Such a gentle man in every way.

Shocked to hear this news. We referred to each other as “brother”. A true LEGEND and will be sorely missed by so many.

Few have been able to display the dedication Seve had to the club. His presence will be missed.

Details of the funeral will follow when known.
