Despite best effort Nedlands men were beaten 6-1 by a strong Bunbury team in the Division 3 final yesterday. Played on the picturesque Hartfield course, all matches were played over 36 holes. Recent rains meant conditions were soggy under foot so the course played long giving an advantage to the longer hitters. Standout performance was Harry Traylen’s 5&4 win. Upon reflection, Nedlands can be proud of great effort this season. Being a 9 hole club, we have a smaller pool of players to chose from compared to the larger 18 hole clubs. The silver lining from yesterday’s defeat is that Bunbury now gain promotion to Division 2 so we won’t have to make the long trip there next year.

In the last round of the regular season, Nedlands beat Rockingham 5-2 at Bunbury to secure second place on the ladder and seal a place in the Division 3 Final. The team has won the right to play Bunbury on Sunday in 36 hole matches at Hartfield with the winner gaining promotion to Division 2.

The weather stayed dry for the match and that inspired some great play with strong wins for Aiden Cooper, Brian Wilsie, Jeremy Crabb, Harry Traylen and Nate Plug.

Nedlands good form continued yesterday with a 5-2 victory against Meadow Springs on the lush fairways of Sea View Golf Club. There were big wins for Harry Traylen, Callum White, Bryan Wilsie and Jeremy Crabb with Nate Plug sneaking a win on the 19th. It wasn’t such a good day for anyone called John in the team with John Strachan and John Samuels both going down to narrow defeats. The close proximity of Sea View was a welcome break to the driving the team has had to endure this season and it was great to see so many Nedlands members out in support.

The win leaves the team with 4 wins from 5 games. The team now face a road trip to Bunbury in the final match of the regular season to play Rockingham. The winner of that match will go on to play Bunbury in the Division 3 Final with promotion to Division 2 at stake.

Young gun Jeremy Crabb finished his match superbly with a hole-in-one on the 14th hole at Sun City versus Kwinana. The shot sealed a strong 5&4 win in his individual match as the team powered to a 5-2 win. There were good wins for Aidan Cooper (7&6), Nat Plug (3&1), Bryan Wilsie (2&1) and great 1 up win for Callum White. That off set losses for John Strachan and Harry Traylen who went down in extra holes after finished their matches all square.

The win leaves the team in a great position to make the final with 3 wins from 4 matches. Next up is Meadow Springs at Sea View Golf Club.

The team was ably supported by captain Gavin Furness, vice captain Joe Alexander and the ever youthful Lou De Verteuil and Ian Ralph.

Nedlands men’s pennant team had a resounding 7-0 win over an under-strength Sun City at Kwinana Golf Club in round 4 of the 2017 season. The team now sit joint second midway through the league matches as they battle for a top-two spot and a place in the final.

Next up for the team is Kwinana at Sun City on Sunday in a crunch match. A victory would put the team in a great position with the last two rounds of matches to go.

The Nedlands men’s pennant team edged a tight match 4-3 against Sea View at Meadow Springs in Round 3 of the 2017 season. In a “must win” match the scores swung one way then the other before Nedlands just came out on top. There were great wins for the young guns, Callum White and Jeremy Crabb who was 3 down early on. Aiden Cooper and John Strachan got the team across the line with close 1up wins. Harry Traylen lost a very tight match on the 20th, Nathan Plug was up against a hot ex-professional Nick Piani and Bryan Wilsie suffered some putting malfunctions during his loss.

The result leaves the team with a win and loss from the first two games but well placed to begin a run of results.

Next up for the team is a match against Sun City at Kwinana Golf Club on Sunday.

Nedlands took on a powerful Bunbury line up at Rockingham and although the end scoreline showed 6-1, as is the case in pennants, a number of matches could have gone either way. Newcomer Stewart Wharton debuting at no.7, had a dream start winning 4&3, whilst the top four matches were decided on the 17th or 18th green.

Thanks to a number of Nedlands members for making the trip to support the team including Joe Alexander, Ian Ralph, Lou De Verteuil, David Bobridge and Jenny, Phil Johnson and Coline Nelson.

Next week the team travels to Meadow Springs to take on neighbour Sea View.

Nedlands men played their sixth and final game of the 2016 Division 3 season yesterday at Sun City against Meadow Springs. In a tight match played in very windy conditions, wins for Jeremy Crabb (8&7), Mark Miller (5&4), Harry Traylen (3&2) , John Strachan and Aidan Cooper (1 hole) ensured that Nedlands prevailed 5-2. Upon reflection, it was very much a “what might have been” season where the team lost 3 matches by the closest of margins and ended with 2 wins and 4 losses. With the final round of matches due to take place at Nedlands next Sunday Rockingham, The Vines and Bunbury are fighting it out for promotion to Division 2.

A feature of Division 3 is the distances each club is required to travel. The Nedlands team travelled over 800kms this season to play their six matches. However, spare a thought for Bunbury who have probably travelled twice that distance!

The team was very appreciative of the supporters who made it out to watch the matches often in cold and blustery conditions. In addition the team recognises all the host clubs who presented their courses in great condition and looked after all the teams.

Nedlands got their first win of the season against Sun City yesterday at Meadow Springs in sunny and breezy conditions. Playing some great golf the team won 6-1 in the penultimate match of the regular season. Harry Traylen played sub-par golf to record a big win; Kenneth Fairweather birdied the last hole to win his match 1up and debutant Jeremy Crabb held his nerve to close out a tight match 1 up. There were also good wins for Ben Cullinan, David Baster and Mark Miller.

The pennant season concludes next week at Sun City with a match against Meadow Springs. The team is looking to put up another good performance to end what has been a challenging season on a high.

Round 5 results

Nedlands made the long trip down to Bunbury to play Sea View in round 4 of the Men’s pennants in an incident-packed day. The team bus carrying 3 members of the team broke down 80kms from Bunbury and with about 90 minutes to tee off it looked like matches would have to be forfeited. However, after some frantic calling around it was discovered the David Baster was just a few minutes behind so was able to pickup the team and all matches started on time.

On the course, wins for David Baster, Harry Traylen and John Strachan left the match score at 3-3. John started his match in fine style with a hole-in-one on the par 3 1st hole after his opponent put his shot to within 6 inches of the cup. His scores of 1, 2, 2 and 3 on the par 3s helped him to a 3/2 victory.

As has happened in the last three matches, the deciding match involved Kenneth Fairweather who holed a gutsy 5 foot putt on the last hole to square his match and take it into extra holes. Unfortunately, Kenneth pulled his tee shot on the 19th and short-sided himself so was unable to match his opponent’s par. That left the match score 4-3 to Sea View and leaves Nedlands with a 0-4 record this season. However the results could have been so different with a bit of luck.

Bun

Two games remain this year so the team is aiming for a strong finish to round off a challenging but enjoyable season.

Round 4 results

Nedlands lost another tight game 4-3 against Bunbury at Sea View in round 3 of the 2016 pennant season. Victories from Harry Traylen, Ben Cullinen and Gavin Parker left the match poised at 3-3 and down to the final match with Kenneth Fairweather. Kenneth fought back from 2 down with 3 to play to level his match with 1 to play. However an errant drive on 18 meant he couldn’t match his opponent’s par and the match went Bunbury’s way.

Next week, the team the travel down to Bunbury to play Sea View with Captain and bus driver, Gavin Furness, optimistic of better results to come.

Nedlands lost out 4-3 in the tightest of matches against Rockingham in Round 2 of the Men’s Pennant Season at The Vines. The match was evenly poised at 3 all with wins for Ben Cullinan, Gavin Parker and John Strachan. The match was to be decided with Kenneth Fairweather’s game going into extra holes and despite a valiant effort he lost out on the 20th. Nedlands now have an 0-2 record so good performances are required if we are to make the Grand Final.

NEDLANDS MEN’S PENNANT TEAM WINS FLAGDivision 3 flag The Men’s Pennant team won the third division pennant flag with a 5 ½ to 3 ½ win.  Playing Meadow Springs for the third time this year, Alex Meneghello, Gavin Parker, Michael Duffy, Ross Nayler, John Strachan, Bryan Wilsie, Aidan Cooper, Steve Noske and Dave Baster were able to break the deadlock between the two clubs at the Western Australian Golf Club on Sunday.  Some strong wins by Bryan Wilsie, Aidan Cooper, Dave Baster, and Steve Noske were supported by a gutsy win on the 20th by John Strachan and an excellent halved match from Gavin Parker.  This is the first time since 1999 the Club has won a Men’s Pennant. A special acknowledgement to the caddies who made the trip to the WAGC to help in the win – well done to Craig Nelson, Greg Parker, Phil Johnson, Tony Hudson, Ian Ralph, Aseem Maroo, Timothy Tan, Jorge Bottello and Adrian Baster. Thanks also to members who came along to offer support – among those spied enjoying the sunshine on a beautiful afternoon were David Bobridge, Ken Langdon, Scotty Williams, Beryl and Jim Forbes, and Don O’Brien. Final scores   The Men’s pennant team qualified for the Division 3 final with a comfortable 5/4 win over Meadow Springs at home. The final will be played at Western Australian Golf Club on Sunday with the first match hitting off at 10.45am. The rescheduled venue will give members and supporters every opportunity to view play as Seve McFarnell’s side attempts to bring home the flag. The Division 1 & 2 finals will also be held at Yokine so look out for our team in white shirts & caps with black pants. http://www.golfwa.org.au/cms/events/pennants/men/metropolitan-pennants/     The Men’s pennant team continued their good form with a comfortable 7/2 win over Sun City. Although matched tee to green, it was the Nedlands players superior skill and knowledge on home greens that proved the difference particularly early in each match. Steve Noske, Bryan Wilsie and junior Aseem Maroo have each won their two matches to date. This week the team travels to Meadow Springs, who are also unbeaten this year. Rd 2 v Sun City     The Men’s pennant team kicked off with a resounding 7/2 win over Rockingham away in dreadful conditions. The mainly untried team revelled under the captaincy of Seve McFarnell and showed the results of some excellent practice sessions under his guidance. The team is at home this week to Sun City. Rd 1 v Rockingham     PENNANT FUND RAISER A wonderful event was held Sunday 14 June to raise funds for the Men’s Metropolitan pennant team. Mal Skipworth did a fantastic job organising the event which involved 9 holes Ambrose at 2.30pm.  Mal’s wife Jenine and son Paul helped out with the organisation and the post round snacks of pizza and BBQ sausages.  Thanks to the Skipworth family. John Clarkson generously donated a model Dutch bicycle which was beautifully presented on an etched mount by Ken Langdon. Thanks to both John and Ken for their support and kind donations.

A good day and thanks to Mal and all those that made it a very enjoyable and successful afternoon.         The men’s pennant team has been relegated to Division 3 after fighting for many years to hold Division 2 status. It was not to be at Hartfield yesterday as our neighbouring 9 hole club Sea View took the honours 6 matches to 3. 5 of the 9 matches went to the last hole, but it was Sea View who came through in the close ones. Ross Naylor (3/1), Alex Meneghello (2/1) and Phil Johnson (2/1) all won their matches on the 17th green but David and Adrian Baster lost on the 18th and 19th respectively. Our top three players were beaten comprehensively on the day. Relegation Final results In what has become a somewhat regular occurrence, the men’s pennant team will contest this week’s relegation final against Sea View at Hartfield. The winner will retain the right to continue in Division 2 whilst the loser drops to Division 3 for next year. Nedlands fate was sealed following a 7/2 home loss to Wanneroo, who will now contest the promotion final. David Baster (8/7) and Aidan Cooper (2/1) were the only victors, whilst some of our experienced players on our layout were not at their best. Conversely the boys team put in another strong performance to win 4/3 and complete a successful season for the juniors. Led by Callum White (5/4), captain Aseem Maroo (1 up), Sean Raj (2/1) and halves to Jordan Chatt and Edmund Hall saw the boys field a full team for the only time which proved to be the difference. Finals     In a virtual repeat of the previous home match, Nedlands men and junior teams recorded strong victories against Mount Lawley yesterday. Aidan Cooper (8/6) and Michael Duffy (6/5) thrashed their opponents whereas Alex Meneghello and Ross Nayler both had to wait until the 18th green to secure their victories. Other winners were Kenneth Fairweather (W/O), David Baster and Phil Johnson again (both 3/2). In junior matches, captain Aseem Maroo and Rob Pluske were impressive in their 6/4 wins, Jordan Chatt won 2 up whilst newcomer Shaun Raj recorded his first matchplay win. Men’s table & results Boy’s table & results   Nedlands men and junior teams recorded victories yesterday against Melville Glades in round 2 pennant matches on home turf. The division two side were led by James Morris (5/4) and Phil Johnson (3/2) who remain unbeaten so far, and were joined by other winners Kenneth Fairweather (7/5), Alex Meneghello (3/1), Michael Duffy (2 up) and Tim Tan (5/3) in the 6/3 victory. Former NGC Proshop casual Hayden Bancroft won his match for Melville Glades 3/1 against David Baster. The juniors once again defied the odds to record a 4/3 win. Captain Aseem Maroo led the way, defeating a lower marker 5/4 off the stick, as did Edmund Hall (3/2) and Robert Pluske (2 up). Top players Callum White and Jordan Chatt ground out halves to provide the winning point. There was an unusual incident during play as a pizza delivery vehicle travelling east down Melvista Avenue somehow lost control, crashed through a couple of pine bollards at the back of the 5th green before becoming airborne on its way to its resting point against a tree adjacent to the front bunker. Fortunately, the driver was shaken but unhurt, and there were no players, officials, caddies or spectators on the green at the time. Pennant results Junior results
