The winners celebrate – Brendan Jones, Keedan Nelles, Will Edibam and Lochie Evans

A beautiful day greeted 56 players (14 groups) on Sunday 20th August in their attempt to qualify for the State Final of the 2023 Scramble – an Ambrose format event.

The winning four would progress to the State final at Araluen Resort on October 22 and would be joined by host club professional Andrew Gott in a bid to qualify for the National Final in late November early December.

With only one team to qualify the stakes were high, competition fierce and there were some excellent scores.

If you thought somewhere around 57 was a winning score, then think again. The winning team this year was a Nedlands Team, with an average age of 20.25 years Will Edibam (23 H’Cap), Keedan Nelles (6 H’Cap), Lochie Evans (28 H’Cap) and Brendan Jones (4 H’Cap) which saw their Handicap for the day set at 7.625.

Their Gross Score of 9 under 63 became a nett score of 55.375 and this was enough to win by one shot from a team led by Nedland’s member Dylan Morgan (7) and members from Mosman Park, – Jordan Tate (9) and Perth Golf Network –Ryan Pontifex (16) and David Hewitt (13). Their gross score of 62 became a nett score of 56.375. NOTE – In 2021 Dylan was on an 18 handicap when his team won by 0.125 of a shot.

Next was another Nedlands “youth” team with an average age of 24.25 years – Guy Taylor (11), Shaun Tatlow (11) Sam Reed (16) and Geremy Fatouros (14). A Gross Score of 64 resulted in a Nett Score of 57.5.

Fourth was a team with an average age of 28 years. The team was led by the experienced Alister Miles (+2). He was joined by Oliver Bisschops (21), Joe Jones (14), and Adam McLaren (15) who had a Gross score of 64 and nett 58.

And finally, the 5th placed team, who were the best of the “non-youth” teams, with an average age of 54.25. Gus Elliott (9), Andrew Roberts, (18), Jeff Lane (15), and Mark Palmer (11). Gross 65 and nett 58.375.

So, a very successful Scramble is over for another year and produced a worthy and youthful winning team. We wish them all the best for the State Final

Editor’s Footnote – It is great to see the success of the younger players. Us older members will have to lift our games to match them.
