Over the weekend one of the club’s three mixed major events took place – The Dalkeith Cup which dates back to 1966. This event is an 18 hole 2 player Aggregate Stableford competition and over 20 mixed partnerships entered this year. Players play their own ball in a Stableford format and then the two individual Stableford scores on each hole are combined.
This year the event was generously sponsored by golfing couple Tony Cowan and Krystyna Knottnerus, a big thank you for their continued support of this event.
This year conditions were fantastic and there were some great individual scores, including 44 points from the sponsor Tony Cowan, 41 points from men’s captain Joe Alexander and 41 points from Ian McCallum (including 28 points on his front 9!). However to win the event, both players must combine well and this year all eyes were on a hot favourite for the event. On the back of winning both mixed majors this year, Gavin Furness was on the hunt to take out the aforementioned ‘Furness Slam’ – by winning all three of the mixed major events in the same calendar year. However anything can happen on the day and unfortunately for Gavin, his mixed major marathon came to a screeching halt.
In third place our sponsors Tony and Krystyna combined for a respectable 71 Stableford points and second place was taken out by the golfing couple Patricia and Steve Noske who bested our sponsors by countback on 71 points.
Leaving our winners for this year, Marg Doyle and Joe Alexander who combined for 74 points and were the reigning champions from last year, making it two in a row for this golfing combination. Well done to Marg and Joe for a great effort again this year.
This year’s field was solid, but it would be desirable to have more mixed golfing combinations in future years. If you wish to play in the Dalkeith Cup next year, don’t be afraid to put your name on the timesheet and the captains/proshop will find you a female/male golfer to play with.
