The previous weekend held the most prestigious men’s event of the calendar – the CG Dudley. The 2 day 36 hole event is played as a stroke format and the results are the basis for the subsequent men’s club championships. The event dates back to 1951 and is named after the golf club’s founder Cyril George Dudley who was the club’s president for a record 27 years between 1932 and 1962 and a life member of this golf club. For those who are not aware, Cyril was an ambitious and talented individual that laid the groundwork for the existence of this golf club and also was a pivotal member of the unsuccessful secession movement in Western Australia during the 1930s. The CG Dudley event is played in his honour every year and this year’s event was made possible thanks to generous sponsorship from Morgan Stanley and members Stuart Beattie and Mark Palmer.

The stunning weather and course conditions made for a plethora of good golfing scores on the first 18 holes of the event with an amazing early score of Nett 61 from morning player Matt King (11 shots better than his handicap!) making for a gross of 75. Well done to Matt for this fantastic round of golf, this score set the bar high early which was attempted to be matched by club veterans Wayne Trumble (Nett 68) and Jack Morris (Nett 69). Other good scores including Nett 70s by John Venner, Edmund Hall, Lou De Verteuil, Ted Mangan and Gavin Furness.

At the start of the second day it was clear who the hot favourite to win the event was. Despite this perhaps unreachable deficit there were strong performances early by Jeremy Crabb (Nett 69) and Callum White (Nett 71) and a splendid round in the afternoon by Riley Gott (Nett 66, Gross 71) and great rounds including 69 Nett by Andrew Frazer and Richard Oates and a good Nett 70 by ex-Dudley winner Grant Macdonald.

Despite these valiant golfing efforts, it was somewhat inevitable that Matt King would be crowned this year’s CG Dudley winner, who followed his 61 on Saturday with a nett 77 on Sunday for 138 nett across 36 holes. This was enough to edge out a solid combined score of 141 by Wayne Trumble across 2 days. A big well done to Matt for his first major win at Nedlands GC and congratulations to Wayne for his runner up finish on the return from injury.

Captain Joe, Matt King and Sponsor Stuart Beattie

The Pascoe Cup winner for the best gross score over the 36 hole event was Ben Cullinan who shot an impressive 147 (3 over par) across the 2 days, including 2 eagles in his Sunday round! Well done to Ben for some great golf over the weekend. This performance was enough to edge out last year’s Dudley, Pascoe and Club Champion Jeremy Crabb who shot a very respectable 152 (8 over par) across 2 days to be the Pascoe Cup Runner-Up.
