They say golf tournaments are won on the final nine holes and that certainly proved to be the case with overnight leader and eventual boy’s winner Hayden Hopewell (70 69 139). In challenging hot conditions with very fast greens, Hopewell began his final round with birdie, birdie before bogeying four of the next six holes to turn two-over the card and his lead gone. As the temperature rose and green speeds increased he produced a magnificent 5-under back nine, with birdies on 10th, 11th (remembering he started with birdies on 1st and 2nd), 13th, 16th and 17th – to shoot 69 and win the event by four strokes from Jordan Jung (72 71 143).
Girls winner Kathryn Norris (75 71 146) notched her third win in succession with a six shot win over Abbie Teasdale (78 74 152) and despite her slow start, played beautifully in the final round with four birdies in six holes around the turn to win comfortably. Norris thanked the grounds staff, noting Nedlands was the best course she had played in recent times, and the sponsors – Cannington Retravision, Captain Stirling IGA, Golf Box, Titleist, Coca Cola and Perth Stitchings – in front of a packed clubhouse.
Nedlands’ Riley Gott (72 70 142) was best nett, a fine achievement for the 11 year old.
Royal Fremantle’s Hayden Hopwell takes a one shot lead into the final round of the Nedlands Junior Masters.
Defending champions Joshua Herrero and Kathryn Norris return for a final shot at taking out the Nedlands Junior Masters. Both will turn 18 by next year but both will fancy repeating last year’s success, particularly Norris who is chasing a three-peat in the absence of last year’s runners up Kirsten Rudgeley and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, which will equal previous three time winner Hira Naveed.
Herrero may face a tougher task with strong opposition expected from Joondalup pair Josh Greer and Connor McKinney.
Spectators most welcome, thanks to our sponsors Golf Box, IGA Captain Stirling, Perth Stitchings, Cannington Retravision, Titleist and Coca-Cola.
Mandurah’s Kathryn Norris defended her APC Nedlands Junior Masters title holding on for a two shot win (70 74 144) over Kirsten Rudgeley and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard (146).
However it was her club team mate Joshua Herrero (69 73 142) who provided the surprise by also recording a two shot win over more fancied Jordan Doull and Cooper Geddes (146).
Six eagles were recorded over the two day event, two by Norris and Hinson-Tolchard on the same holes (9th and 14th) as well as Liam McEvoy (4th) and Josh Greer (6th).
Humid conditions were quite draining in round one before some sea breeze relief was welcomed later in round two. The course was presented extremely well again by the course staff and all players spoke highly of the conditions of the greens. Many thanks to major sponsor APC, other sponsors, tournament director Cedric Bell and volunteers.

Outstanding youngster Minwoo Lee confirmed his status as the State’s best junior by taking out his second APC Nedlands Junior Masters title played in stunning conditions. With the course is tip top tournament condition and speedy greens, Minwoo was the only player to break par both days (67 69 136) to win by four shots from playing partner Ben Ferguson (68 72 140) from The Vines. Cooper Geddes, Mandurah, faded a little to finish third (69 75 144).
The win was set up on the opening day as heading up the last Minwoo was seven under having carded nine birdies and two bogeys, but an aggressive flop resulted in a double bogey finish to open the door for Ferguson (two eagles on his way to 68) and Geddes (69). A birdie, birdie start on the second day set up a comfortable final round.
Similarly 15 year old favourite Kathryn Norris also opened with a five under 69, highlighted by four straight birdies from the 13th, and was the only girl to break par both days (69 73 142) to record a comfortable victory from Kirsten Rudgeley.
Nedlands member Edmund Hall provided some local cheer by winning best nett (67 71 138).
Sponsors APC Group, Retravsion, Perth Stitchings, Golf Box, Titleist, Coca Cola and Captain Stirling IGA were recognised at the presentation along with event founder and NGC life member Russell Parker. As is customary following this event, the State junior teams to compete in Tasmania were announced.
